Swans

NOTE: As a result of an abnormally harsh winter, large areas of heavy ice and snow remain on the Avon River blocking the free-flow of water.  Swans require open water for a healthy habitat without which their spring nesting may be compromised. Therefore, to protect the swans, the planned ceremonial release on March 30th will not take place.

If there’s one visual that says Stratford to everyone who visits, it is the swans. Regal, graceful, majestic—all words that describe these noble birds. And you might think that the Release of the Swans is an event of Wagnerian proportions, with these mighty birds bursting forth from their winter pens. But what you'll discover instead is quirky charm as you join the feathery herd along their walk to the water—flat-footed silly swans, goosing each other along as they waddle and preen. The Perth County Pipe Band provides musical accompaniment, which adds to the pomp and tongue-in-cheek circumstance. But be aware you’ll be observed too—the swans have been penned up all winter, so you can be sure they’ll stretch their curious heads up and take a gander at you!

The swans have been lovingly guarded and raised and guided since 1918. You can download and read about our pride and joy in the The Swans of Stratford at left or pick-up the book The Swans of Stratford, by the late Robert Miller, the Honourary Keeper of the Swans.
