Our Swans
In Stratford tine doesn’t fly…it glides. Stratford’s honorary ambassadors set the pace for the city. Last year’s fuzzy grey cygnets have lost their winter flannels and are gliding and re-settling around Stratford’s own swan lake: Lake Victoria, part of the Avon River seen from downtown. Each spring, the annual swan parade sees the wintering swans, and other exotic water fowl, waddling and toddling down to the water – Scottish pipe band and all. While on your de rigueur stroll along the lakeside, you might see a pair of cobs (males) out on the lake swimming synchronized 360° turns – it’s a friendly territorial ritual.
Just so you know, the large white specimens are Mute Swans, the black ones are Australian Black Swans, and Stratford resident Loreena McKennitt’s song, The Bonny Swans, is not about Stratford’s flock.
